Empowering Zebras to achieve their goals and take back their independence!
At Recovery Sports Therapy, we will take the time to evaluate your individual needs. We understand that no two zebras have the same stripes. Living with a chronic condition can be very frustrating, and we understand that you have probably spent a lot of time and energy to get diagnosed and are looking for some answers. We understand your frustration with not being understood and will carefully evaluate all your troublesome joints. We will develop a safe and effective exercise program with you and provide exercises so you can continue your treatment at home. It takes time to build strength, patience and commitment to performing a little bit of exercise each day will help you achieve your goals. Specific exercises will be selected to get the maximum benefit without putting other joints at risk. Research has shown that strong muscles in the legs can help to decrease POTS symptoms by decreasing or preventing blood from pooling in your legs when you are upright. In addition, some cardiovascular exercises such as biking or walking have also been shown to decrease POTS symptoms. We know that you may not be able to complete cardiovascular exercise yet, we will help you gain the strength and endurance to do so.
Recommendations on braces, splints and taping
Many people with EDS have difficulty with their hands and fingers. After evaluating your needs, we can fit you for custom Ring Splints. The order is then sent to the Silver Ring Splint company who will make the splint and mail it directly to you. We will make specific recommendations on braces for other joints if needed. The Sacroiliac joints are commonly affected in those with connective tissue disorders and we can recommend a brace as well as provide instruction on its fit and use.Since not all joints can be braced or splinted, we can apply a variety of taping techniques to help support joints or tissue surrounding the joints. We can teach you or a caregiver to apply the taping once we find what technique works best for you. We understand that not all people with connective tissue disorders will be able to tolerate tape on their skin.
Manual Therapy & Dry Needling
Special consideration needs to be made when performing hands-on techniques with people with hypermobility. Experienced hands-on treatment will help decrease pain so you can get moving. We understand that joints get out of alignment frequently, through no fault of your own, and can cause a significant amount of pain. Various manual therapy techniques will likely be needed to obtain an improved alignment. Once the joint is in a better position, taping may be beneficial to maintain the position. Exercise is best done with joints in optimal alignment.
Dry Needling may be helpful in certain situations. Dry needling is an effective treatment for neck pain and headaches. Dry Needling can help with many other chronic tendon or joint issues. After meeting with you, we can decide together if dry needling is right for you. Visit our dry needling page for more information.
